Retail units generally fall into two types of construction: Pure retail buildings are often large open plan buildings, such as many garden centre, hard ware stores. These are best suited for a beam and column structure and often use C4 beams are the roof beams in these buildings. Mixed developments are often retail units at ground floor and apartment structures above. The lower levels are suited to beam and column arrangements, with large open areas, whereas the upper levels are typical apartment layouts, suited to cross wall construction. These generally require a transfer structure at first floor, to allow for this change in layout.
